Droney Express

Sponsored by George Fox University

Describe your project ...

Currently, there are no commercial products available for purchase for a system like this. There are systems that autonomously land and rapidly charge the drone but this defeats the purpose because the charging time is too long.

What are your goals?

Drones are known to be of great use for various long distance applications. Drones have come a long way in the design of the automation of flight and maneuvering. However, the application of long distance travel is not yet possible through a fully automated system, since the drones don’t yet have a method of constant charging, thus they must be recharged manually. The main problem with drones for any application is battery life.

What do you need?

Need lots of amazing and smart people to help complete this project! Any and all help is welcome!

What inspired this project?

The goal by the end of the spring 2019 semester is to have the drone operating with the batteries in the external cage and can be swapped manually. The next phase of the project is to automate the swapping of the battery cage. The money received will be used to buy components for automation of the drone and swapper.

This project is currently...

This project is a proof of concept and we are excited to see where it will go in future servant engineering teams. Our team is looking for makers who have experience in drones, machine vision, sensing, automation and software design who will further progress this project.

Tell us about yourself!

We are all engineers who love to solve problems and make things. The motivation we get from this project is facing challenges and finding unique ways to solve them. George Fox University does not have a multirotor drone club but we believe this is a catalyst to starting one because it encourages cross-disciplinary learning. “Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward. For there you have been, and there you will always long to return.” - Leonardo da Vinci

Our solution focuses on this problem for hobbyist and other makers. To increase flight time and avoid human intervention, we are creating an automated system to hot swap batteries in drones. A rail system will hold the batteries in a cage and allow the entire cage to be changed with a new cage of fresh batteries.
